Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the amount of school work you receive? Felt lost in a world of endless opportunities? Looking for extracurriculars and volunteer experiences without any idea where to begin? Well then, look no further. Galicia Gordon, a student living in Canada, noticed that there wasn’t an organization that consolidated all the resources that a student may require to succeed. She recognized the need for a support system, which would bolster students by providing assistance in the form of tailored guidance in order to help students reach their full potential. So, she came up with a solution: Leading Learners. Leading Learners is a non-profit organization based in Canada that provides individualized support for students with the intention of helping them achieve their goals without the stress and mental fatigue which often accompanies ambitious students. The organization offers a wide range of services for student needs and focuses on enhancing learning experiences, finding and cultivating passions, and consolidating volunteer opportunities. From volunteer opportunities to scholarships to subject-specific study guides, and even a study timer, Leading Learners puts it all in one place. And Gordon’s mission is paying off because Leading Learners currently engages over 800 students who are involved with the organization through social media. Already, the organization has put resources in the hands of students across ten schools in Canada. Gordon takes pride in being able to understand the needs of every student and is eager to provide personalized resources for each one! She and her team assess the requirements of each student and strive to find solutions using free, and accessible resources. According to Gordon, students nowadays are afraid or anxious to ask for help, holding them back from accessing much of their potential. In fact, the organization began when Gordon noticed how her friends struggled to find important information, such as volunteering opportunities and were afraid to ask around for help. She is now ensuring that Leading Learners helps ease that stress by fostering continuous learning in an encouraging and tolerant environment. While the organization started off in Vancouver, British Columbia, it has seen rapid growth and reached students across Canada. And the astonishing impact that the organization has had is visible through the glowing testimonials that it has received. Many high school students have credited Leading Learners with teaching them how to balance academics with the upkeep of their well-being; a skill that has become critical in this day and age of virtual learning! And several students point out the benefits of using Leading Learners, such as the scholarship page on their website which gathers information from various sources before compiling it in an easy and accessible way. Participants have also valued the presence of a “Support Box” which allows them to share their thoughts in a safe and controlled environment, after a long day at school. Many have stated that they find the tips and advice provided by Leading Learners to be invaluable! And Gordon couldn’t be more glad to say that she and her organization have reached thousands of Canadian students with their mission of student empowerment. As for the future of Leading Learners, only time will tell. Their number one priority, Gordon says, “is to extend Leading Learners’ reach and help as many struggling students as possible.” Their current outreach initiatives range from organizing Leading Learners’ clubs to visiting different schools to producing “Student Success” booklets. Their clubs, along with “Ambassadors Programs” are widespread, offering any and all students a space to thrive in the hectic bustle of academic life. Best of all, Gordon continues to ensure that her team doesn’t just want to be the ones Leading Learners, rather, they want to empower the students to become their own leaders.
