Written by: Taylor Coriolan Over the past week, the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery ignited the tense conversation we need to have about racism in America.
The 25 year old was shot by white supremacists on February 23rd while he was jogging through his neighborhood. A video online shows the fatal last moments of Arbery’s life. My question to people is: how many more black people have to die for people to see that racism is still a problem? It is such a shame that people are not acknowledging the apparent racism within this country. Black people cannot do a single thing because they can easily become a target. This fear has led us to not even be able to trust the police because of the amount of racist officers. I have seen now more than ever because of the social distancing orders due to Corona Virus. White people in West Village, New York have police officers handing them masks and watching them gather in large groups in parks. While on the other hand, in Brooklyn, police officers are assaulting black people for doing the same. The unfair treatment and abuse of power makes me sick. From everyday citizens to police officers being absolutely racist, how does anyone expect black people or any person of color to feel safe? The president hasn’t even acknowledged the death of Ahmaud Arbery and the violent acts of police officers. A change has to be made in the way we treat one another. To hate someone you don’t know because of the color of their skin is appalling. We need justice and to take action. Visit RunWithMaud.com to sign the petition to help seek the justice he deserves.
